Who knew that a game where you can customize your own jelly bean avatar and lead it through rounds of jumping, grabbing, diving, and running would become the most downloaded PS Plus game of all time. Sony recently announced that Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout, created by Mediatonic, has sold out more than 7 million copies on PC. The game started blowing up when top streamers such as Félix “xQcOW” Lengyel and Timothy “Timthetatman” Betar began playing it on Twitch. As more streamers started joining in, many viewers became immersed in this party game that eventually turned into a competitive tournament during Twitch Rivals.
Eighty streamers. Twenty teams of four. Ten matches. Below are the teams listed. Each team gets points based on how many players qualify from each team.
In the first round in each match, for every team member that qualifies from the first round can get one point. For the second round, two points are earned when each player qualifies for their team. Round three gives three points and etc. Teams queue up for 6 regulation games and 4 knockout games. After the 7th game, half of the team (11th-20th place) will be eliminated. After the 8th game, 6th-10th place will be knocked out. After the 9th game, 3rd-5th place teams will be gone. Finally, after the 10th game, the final winner is determined.
I personally thought it was really amusing to watch. There were certain streamers I enjoyed more than others, but the camera could only focus on a few streamers, and one game at a time. So usually some people preferred to directly watch the streamers they like if they were streaming at all.
Watching Twitch Rivals also differed greatly from other competitive games like League of Legends. The casters were more entertaining than analytical, creating a silly and exciting stream to see streamers get both frustrated and wild. It’s honestly impressive seeing such a new game blow up on Twitch and being treated like an esport. Overall, a successful Twitch Rival stream for everyone to pop in and out when they want to see streamers getting heated over jumping jelly beans.
Note that this is only for week 1 as teams that were kicked out will receive the chance to rise up again in upcoming Twitch Rival matches. Below are the current standing points for the teams. It seems that Edwin “castro_1021” Castro, Jamie “bateson87” Bateson, Smash690, and Tubasuki finished first place.
The second season for Fall Guys has been revealed with the teaser trailer that showed a medieval theme that consists of many fantastical elements. Costumes include dragons, knights, wizards, and more. There will also be new rounds where players will frantically have to jump over castle walls, use teamwork to move ramps, and avoid swinging axes. It was officially announced that it will be released on October 6 according to Mediatonics.
Fall Guys is a multiplayer party game that consists of up to 60 players online where a bunch of cute jelly beans are struggling round-after-round in a free-for-all until one victor obtains the crown. The amount of jelly beans all stacked up together create a chaotic, overcrowded, and wild scene that evokes both frustration and laughter.
However, hackers want to ruin the fun. They’re one of the biggest issues with the game right now, but developers are trying to figure out how to counter the issue, according to Mediatonic. It feels like making the effort of cheating in the game just goes against the spirit of this friendly game. Fall guys is created to be a childlike game where you’re allowed to fool around without feeling that you’re in a stressful and competitive situation.
Unlike in other battle royale games like Fornite, it’s a place to relieve stress and mess around with players where you can mindlessly press the arrow keys and space-bar. The other difference is that once you cheat in Fall Guys, it discourages other players who then have no chance at victory, unless the hackers lose on purpose. Additionally, there isn’t a report system which only encourages cheating.
Fall Guys continue to shine in the spotlight by hosting a charity auction with a $1 million dollar joint bid by Jimmy “MrBeast” Donaldson, and Tyler “Ninja” Belvins, two content creators, as well as first-person shooter training program Aim Lab and esports organization G2 Esports. Due to their contributions, Fall Guys will design four new costumes that will be added to Fall Guys. The money was donated to SpecialEffect, a charity that helps vulnerable and physically disabled people find ways to play video games.
