AFSCME Local 3299, the University of California’s biggest worker union, gathered outside the UCLA Medical Center this morning to go on strike. Their message was that the UC system was allegedly outsourcing jobs and not giving pay raises, so they demand a change.

The Union has been negotiating with UC for over two years now and according to UC, the union has turned down over a dozen of their offers. UC has settled contracts with 7 other unions since protests began two years ago, which makes AFSCME the only union which has not yet reached an agreement with the university. The protest started in front of the medical center at 8 a.m followed by a walking protest at 10am down down to Wilshire Boulevard via Westwood Boulevard. Once they reached the UCLA Health Wilshire Center, the crowd then circled the block around the building in an effort to direct its message toward the HR department which resides there.
